The best areas of Mallorca to explore by yacht

Mallorca is the biggest island of the Balearics. With clear blue skies and more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Mallorca offers huge diversity – an island of contrasts. From old fishing harbors to mega-sized marinas, the breathtaking Tramuntana mountains to long sandy beaches – it simply has everything. Due to its central location on the ancient Mediterranean trading route, the island of Mallorca has seen its share of conquerors, invaders, and settlers over the centuries, evidence of which can be found around the island.

Away from its beautiful coastline, the villages and towns all tell a story through their ancient architecture. More recently the painter and sculptor Joan Miro lived and worked here, Frederic Chopin wintered here and many stars call this island their home. One of the island’s most famous people today is Rafael Nadal, the world’s number one tennis player, hailing from the island’s town of Manacor.

Enjoy discovering a small selection of places that we have prepared for you, worth seeing during your holidays onboard your luxury charter yacht.

Cabrera

The name Cabrera “goatherd” comes from the large population of goats who lived on the island since ancient times. They were removed from the island in the twentieth century as they prevented the development of any vegetation.

It is the largest of the 19 islands and islets that make up the archipelago of Cabrera. Its coastline has beautiful cliffs, coastal rocks, deep coves, several caves of breath-taking beauty and sandy beaches.

Because of its natural abundance of seabirds (including cormorants, shearwaters, falcons, ospreys and Caspian gulls), rich marine life (dolphins and sea snails) and its native flora and fauna, it is protected as a national park.

Just over an hour sailing from Mallorca, stands this spot that boasts a considerable wealth of nature. In this group of islands and calcareous rocky isles, its marine ecosystem is particularly noteworthy, with the presence of meadows of Neptune grass, enabling the proliferation of marine fauna. This marine area is one of the best-preserved on the Balearic coastlines.

Apart from its natural attractions, it possesses others of a cultural variety, such as the 14th century Castle, declared to be a historic-artistic monument, plus land and underwater archaeological sites.
Make sure to let us know in time if you would like to visit Cabrera during your yacht charter, as a previous reservation is required.

Cap Formentor / Formentor Beach

Located on the most northern point of Mallorca, at the end of the Serra de Tramuntana, you will find the Cap Formentor, which means “end of Formentor” – a 20 km peninsula, northeast of the Port of Pollensa.

All the way up the top you will find a lighthouse, and although not open to visitors, you can walk around its rocky surroundings. Make sure to bring a camera when driving up the peninsula, the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and offers great photo opportunities.

It can be reached by car, bus or bicycle along a spectacular 13km long road, built by the Italian engineer Antonio Paretti, running from Port to Pollensa all the way up.

Formentor beach is surely one of the most beautiful spots on Mallorca and very popular. Situated in the north-west of Mallorca and approximately 7 km from Port de Pollensa. It’s the breathtaking backdrop of pine trees and the view to the Tramuntana mountains make it easy to understand the popularity. The beach with fine white sand is about a kilometre long and counts with crystal clear water. The trees overhang the beach and offer plenty of shade on hot summer days. Enjoy a relaxing swim in the beautiful waters while your chef is preparing a delicious lunch onboard your yacht.

Dragonera

One of the places not to be missed in Mallorca is the island of Dragonera, a small island in the area of Andratx, which has been a natural park since 1995 due to its beautiful corners and the great variety of species it contains.

La Dragonera is a small island of about 4 km2, 700 metres from Sant Elm, in the municipality of Andratx. Since it is an island, you have to reach it by private boat or by “La Margarita”, a famous wooden boat, which covers the distance in 20 minutes and starts from Sant Elm.
There are three lighthouses on the island, which can be visited by different routes. Most impressive is the route to Na Popis, the highest point of the island, which is about 350 m high. From this point, one can enjoy beautiful, breathtaking views: the whole island and its most peculiar places, as well as the entire coast of Mallorca.

The excursion to Sa Dragonera can also be done with children, as they can get to know all the animal species that live on the island: all kinds of birds and the famous “sargantanas mallorquinas”. You can also take the route to the Tramuntana lighthouse, which is the shortest route with magnificent views of the whole of south-east Mallorca. In this area, you can often see groups of dolphins playing freely with the waves of the yachts.

Es Trenc

Sea-sand-sun lovers cannot fail to visit what is undoubtedly the most beautiful beach in Mallorca: Es Trenc. Or at least, it is one of the most famous ones; and possibly the most iconic one: its turquoise waters, its shining white sand and its environment have made it one of the 10 most “Instagrammed” beaches in Spain.

Playa Es Trenc is located in the municipality of Las Salinas, in the south of the island of Mallorca. A large tongue of white sand bathed by clear, clean, shallow waters with an impressive range of turquoise colours.

But Es Trenc is not only the most beautiful beach in Mallorca. The setting here is spectacular. To begin with, on the very same beach we can find a series of machine-gun nests built during the Second World War. They were never used, luckily, and the Madrid collective Boa Mistura turned them into works of art a few years ago by painting them white and decorating them with verses by the local poet Miquel Costa i Llobera. The natural enclave of Es Trenc is of considerable wealth and has been protected for a few years. It has been recognized as a Natural Area of Special Interest (among other denominations) and is a great place during the fall to observe the passage of migratory birds – highlighting the majestic flamingos – in the very near wetlands of Salobrar de Campos. In the year 2017, the Es Trenc beach was declared a Maritime Terrestrial Natural Park. Among other things, this means that there cannot be buildings in its vicinity. In fact, they have even come to demolish constructions of beach bars that were located directly on the beach.

Also in the immediate vicinity (just less than a kilometer from the beach) we find the Salinas de Es Trenc, which have more than ten centuries of history. You can book guided tours to visit it; also, here you will find the highly demanded flor de sal (salt flower) – a must for gourmet lovers – which you can purchase from the boutique that is located in its facilities.

Palma

In 2015 Palma de Mallorca was named the world’s best place to live by the Sunday Times. Palma, the capital of Mallorca and the Balearic islands, enjoys an excellent climate all year round. A city of diversity with so many different things to offer, a historic quarter, the breath-taking Cathedral which you won’t miss when you enter the bay of Palma on your yacht and various fresh food markets are just some of the sites well worth visiting.

Due to the extensive renovation measures, over the past 10 years, Palma has changed considerably – and today the “Pearl of the Mediterranean” is more beautiful than ever.

Lots of new trendy bars and restaurants and a huge list of new luxury boutique hotels, a kilometre long waterfront promenade and an extensive cultural scene can be found in the picturesque streets of Palma.

The local kitchen remains faithful to the principles of the Mediterranean cuisine. Local products like Sobrasadas, Wines, ensaimadas, oranges from Soller and Olives picked on the island can be found in the great local markets like Santa Catalina and the Mercat Olivar, which are great locations for your next provisioning during your charter.

Port Andratx

Puerto Andratx is one of the oldest places in Mallorca and is located in the Serra de Tramuntana and is known for its modern and contemporary art galleries. With its picturesque narrow streets and rustic heritage, it is one of the most authentic Mallorcan places worth visiting and residents give a warm welcome to international visitors.
In just a few years it has gone from being a small fishing village to becoming a luxury residential tourist destination where actors, celebrities and affluent people stroll through, and some of the most renowned restaurants on the island can be found in this beautiful location.

The area around the port and the promenade is really lively, many luxury boats are moored there, there is a cosmopolitan atmosphere with many restaurants, extravagant gift shops and relaxed atmosphere places. In the surroundings of the port of Andratx we find several paradisiacal beaches like Cala Moragues, Cala D’Egos or Cala LLamp and from the Port of Andratx you can access by boat to the island of Dragonera.

Port de Soller

Situated on the spectacular north-west coast of Mallorca is Port de Soller, a picturesque, small coastal village, which has become well know and very popular for its historic tram. Port de Soller is a protected harbour, surrounded by beautiful scenery. A great place to eat fresh fish and seafood and perfect for an overnight stop during your yacht charter. Its well-equipped marina will ensure your stay on board to be comfortable. Make sure you take a ride with the San Francisco-style tram shuttling between the town and Port de Sóller – its tracks passing citrus-filled gardens – which was originally used to transport oranges but is now a pleasant way to travel to the attractive horseshoe-shaped port. If you go on a Saturday, you will be able to stroll around the local market in Soller village.

Portals Vells & Puerto Portals

Portals Vells is one of the most visited bays in Mallorca due to its picturesque surroundings. Anchoring off in Portals Vells, enjoying a nice bath and relaxing drinks on the aft deck of your luxury charter yacht is definitely a must during your stay on board.

In the heart of the bay of Palma and located only 15km away from the airport, you will find one of the most popular ports of Mallorca, Puerto Portals. With an amazing selection of lovely restaurants and bars, Puerto Portals is definitely a place to be seen and spend time at. It is a great spot to linger, people-watch and to soak up the glitzy atmosphere.

Sa Calobra

Hidden between the steep cliffs on the northwest coast of the island you will find Sa Calobra, an unusual beach, partly pebbles, partly sand, situated at the end of a gorge, called the Torrent de Pareis. Sa Calobra is surely one of the most famous spots on the Mallorca.

Two beaches are separated in the cove. On the one hand, you will find a small stony beach which is not that spectacular, but if you follow the path, you will come to a short, narrow tunnel from which you emerge to the main Sa Calobra beach. It is only a very small beach but the scenery is so spectacular that it became very popular for visits. Tucked away in steep cliffs and divided by the river gorge, the water in Sa Calobra is crystal clear and beyond inviting to have a swim.

Sa Calobra is not a party beach, so sit back and relax at the end of the day and watch the beautiful sunset while enjoying a nice cold beer or a glass of Champagne.
